Four Reasons Why Your AC Isn’t Cold Enough

You walk into the room and turn on the air conditioner. You feel air coming through the vents but it just doesn’t quite feel cold enough. After waiting several minutes, you decide that something is wrong because the air conditioner isn’t putting out cold air like it should. What could be the cause of this trouble? Well, there are several reasons why it may not be working right. These problems listed below are just a few of the most common reasons for inadequate cooling.

Cooling System is Undersized

Your heating and cooling system must be sized correctly to adequately do its job. If it is too large or too small for the square footage of the home it will not keep it warm or cool enough. If you are experiencing inadequate cooling, you should call your HVAC provider and have them accurately size your system. If it is undersized they can recommend a product in the correct size that will fit your needs.

Evaporator Coils are Dirty

The cooling system’s evaporator coils can become so blocked by dust and debris until it cannot properly function. Because the coils are so close together, the surface of the coils collect dust that sticks to them because they are damp. When too much dust, hair and dander collect on the coils they can get completely blocked so that no air can pass through.

Dirty Air Filter

Air filters should be checked and changed monthly. In many instances, it is a dirty air filter that is to blame for inadequate cooling. The filter catches a lot of dust and dirt that would otherwise clog the motor and blower fans. When a filter collects so much dust that the entire surface of the filter is covered it locks air flow to the system which can cause a lot of other problems and damage your system.

Improper Thermostat Setting

Settings can get changed easily, especially if you have children tall enough to reach the buttons. Always check to see that the thermostat is set to the proper temperature and in the “cool” position. If it is set too high you can lower it by 5 degrees and see if that solves the problem. It may just be that it is too warm.

If you are experiencing any of the problems listed above the good news is that all of these conditions are fixable and most can be prevented with proper care and maintenance. A preventative maintenance program can catch most of these problems before they cause any trouble. Contact ABA Heating and Cooling for all issues related to heating and air conditioning.
